Malaysia declares smog emergency near Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia declared a state of emergency Thursday in two provinces near the capital Kuala Lumpur after acrid smog brought by forest fires in Indonesia hit dangerous levels.
In what has become the worst haze crisis in eight years, a thick pall of noxious smog has been enveloping the capital and its surrounding areas since last week.
The situation turned worse in the last few days forcing schools to close and disrupted port operations.
"In view of the haze situation in Kuala Selangor and Port Klang, where the air pollution index has reached above 500 level, I declare a state of emergency for the whole of Kuala Selangor and Port Klang effective immediately," Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said in a statement
